Synopsis
Justin Mackenzie
I made one little drunk mistake ten years ago, and my older brother is still holding it over my head. Okay, it was a big mistake, really big. If I want the jerk to continue keeping my mistake a secret, I have to give up my vacation plans and play detective for his friends. Someone is stealing from their company, and I’m supposed to quietly investigate, but there’s a catch. To keep my investigation under wraps, they’ve come up with a cover for me, and when I meet her, things change drastically.
My “Cover” is model Brianne Bisset, and I’m about to make capturing her heart my new mission. There’s no way I’m leaving here without making the her mine forever.
Brianne Bisset
When my best friend asks me to pretend to be some computer nerd’s girlfriend so he can investigate thefts at her husband’s company, I’m not too sure about their plan. I’m uncomfortable around new people, but this is all for pretend, so I figure why not? I mean, I don’t really have to date him. One look at the hot nerd and I change my mind. Dating him isn’t going to be a hardship at all. Now, I’m hoping I get to keep him.
You might remember Brianne Bisset from Nerd Boy. She’s giving Justin Mackenzie a run for his money in this new book that brings the Love at First Sight, Sweet Beginnings, and Loving a Bennett Boys series together. This book is a standalone story, but there are characters from all three series in it.
This over-the-top quick read is just what you're looking for if you like instalove romance with a little bit of humor.
The cover model dating the hot nerd is a recipe for love.
Chapter One Look Inside
Chapter One Look Inside
I dress casually in jeans and a button-down white shirt. It’s not like I need to impress this woman. As my Uber pulls up at the address, my mouth falls open. Damn, Dylan Drake has done well for himself. We aren’t hurting, by any means, but this is a whole different league altogether. The modern glass and steel building has a doorman who questions me and smiles when I answer correctly. The security guard keys a code into the elevator before the doors close, and it silently begins to move.
Riding the elevator to the top floor causes my stomach to drop, and I swallow several times before I press the button next to the huge metal door. Dylan Drake opens the door, and I blink. He looks nothing like the cold businessman of this morning. Instead, his black hair is no longer slicked back, and the business suit has been replaced with jeans and a polo shirt.
“Justin, come in and meet everyone.”
He steps back for me to walk past, and when I look up, I swear the earth stops spinning. Sweat breaks out all over my body. It’s fucking her. My biggest regret and deepest, darkest fantasy is standing next to a shorter redheaded woman. And God, she’s as spectacular as she was the first time I saw her.
I attended a fucking charity antique auction in Dallas with Mitchell when I turned around and spotted the stunning brunette standing alone next to the bar. She appeared to be bored with the event as she stood alone and watched everyone without interacting in the conversation. It was like an invisible force pulled at me from across the room. All my focus was centered on the stunning woman. I’d almost talked myself into approaching her when one of the assholes sitting next to me followed my gaze and laughed. “Forget about her. Everyone knows she’s the queen bitch.” I turned to stare at the little fucker, and he shrugged. “If you don’t believe me, walk up and try to talk to her. She’ll smile coldly and walk away. Every fucking guy around has tried and failed. She’s known as the ice queen.” He’d just finished speaking when I witnessed her in action. Some asshole walked up and smiled at the woman. I couldn’t make out their conversation, but a couple of seconds later, he slunk away with his tail between his legs while she stood there coldly watching.
A strange pain struck me, and I sat quietly the rest of the night trying to rub the ache out of my chest. Mitchell hovered like a mother hen the rest of the trip, then had his wife, Libby, nearly drive me insane with her “mothering” until I convinced them I’d recovered from our little trip. I don’t think the fucker ever realized what happened to cause my distress, and I’d prefer not to tell my big brother that I lost my heart to a woman only to find out she was an ice-cold bitch.
Now, it looks like Karma isn’t finished with me because she’s standing in Dylan Drake’s living room, right next to the woman Dylan is wrapping his arm around. Fuck my life to hell. Please tell me she isn’t…
“Justin, I want you to meet Brianne Bisset.” Yep, that one drunk mistake ten years ago is coming back to bite me in the ass big fucking time.
I try to smile as I extend my hand. “Nice to meet you.” When electricity runs through my body as our hands touch, I barely contain my growl. It’s impossible to keep my cock from turning to stone in my pants.
Her dark brown eyes dilate as she swallows. “You too.” I look down and realize I’m still holding her soft hands. As I let her hand go, she slowly pulls it back and grabs onto the back of the sofa. There’s a little bead of sweat running down behind her ear that proves she’s affected by me, too.
The petite redhead pulls away from Dylan and smiles. “I’m Chloe Drake. Let’s have a seat in the living room.”
As I turn to follow them to the living room, I see Chloe attempting to signal Brianne while Brianne is shrugging and gesturing back. Dylan leans over and mutters, “Don’t try to figure out those women. It’ll hurt your brain. Come on. I have the good whiskey, and you look like you need it.” The man truly is a genius.
After Dylan hands me a glass of whiskey and we sit on his huge white leather sectional, Chloe calls, “Boss Man, we’re going to check on Bree and then dinner.” Before Dylan can respond, she pulls Brianne from the room.
Dylan turns to me and smiles. “My daughter is already in bed. Chloe checks on her non-stop, and Brianne loves to spoil the child. It’s a long story, but that’s actually how we met Brianne. She was Tate’s date at a function, and we thought she was the biggest bitch around, but come to find out she’s actually the shyest person around. Even though she’s a successful fashion model, Brianne has social anxiety, and to combat it, she stands coldly and pretty much ignores everyone.” He takes a sip of his whiskey as my heart runs away in my chest. I’m wondering if Dylan is telling the truth or making up stories to cover for his wife’s best friend. “At that same function, Chloe got ill and couldn’t find me. Brianne stepped in and took care of her, got her home, and made sure Chloe was okay until I got here. It’s how we got to see the real Brianne, and it turns out she’s a great person after you get past the shyness.”
I’m letting it all sink in when the two women walk back into the room. I’ve been torturing myself for months for no reason. I listened to some asshole sitting at the table with me instead of going with my instincts, and this is what it got me. Months of long nights where I dreamed of her luscious body wrapped around mine only to wake up alone and unsatisfied. All those fucking lonely nights were unnecessary. Brianne looks at me and smiles, but her eyes never quite hold mine. She’s biting her lip, and it hits me that she really is as shy as she is beautiful.
Dylan breaks the uncomfortable silence. “I want to thank both of you for helping us out. This means so much to Tate and me.” As both Dylan and Chloe smile, I look over at Brianne and watch as a blush rises from her neck up over her face and wonder what she’s thinking.
